What Do Electrical Engineers Do?

Current as of 10/25/2006

Electrical Engineers have exciting careers designing anything and everything that uses electricity. They design power systems that bring electricity to our homes, and they also design all of our communications systems, electronic devices, electrical appliances, computers, and medical equipment. They also work with medical doctors; they work in the space program; and they work with many other kinds of engineers and professionals. Many of them also have exciting jobs as scientists, inventing new kinds of electronic technology and devices that help humankind. Electrical engineers are very respected and admired for their profession.

Unlike the technical degree, which prepares you for a service-related career (repairing, installing, servicing) the electrical engineering degree prepares you for a professional career in design and research and development (R&D).

Would you like to become an electrical engineer? Any one with the desire and motivation can! You need to first study hard in school, especially in mathematics and science. Math and science are the basic "tools" that electrical engineers use in their work. You should also get as much computer experience as possible—word processing, spread sheets, PowerPoint presentations, PageMaker, Windows and the Internet. Engineers and scientists also need to write and speak effectively so work extra hard in your English courses, too! Don’t overlook your interests in art, music and foreign language—we need engineers and scientists who have these creative attributes to provide new inventions and developments.

Once in high school, you might want to come to South Dakota State University, like many other students, to learn how to get your college degree and start an exciting career as an electrical engineer. We will be waiting for you and look forward to helping you start your career.

The faculty and staff of SDSU’s Electrical Engineering program can also assist you with your school science fair projects or personal hobby projects.  These arrangements should be made through your school’s math/science teacher or principal. Why not arrange for a personal visit and tour of our facilities? We encourage you to also come with your family, spouse and interested friends. You may contact us by phone, e-mail or in person.
