| Each year, usually in the fall, the Fillbrandt Observatory, in conjunction with amateur astronomers in the area, host star parties for each of the elementary schools in Brookings. These parties typically involve the setup of about 10 portable telescopes and are attended by well over 100 students and parents. | |||||

| During the course of the school year, Fillbrandt Observatory staff put on star parties for K-12 students in Brookings and the surrounding communities. During the 2003-2004 school year, Larry and Judy hosted star parties for Brookings Elementary and High School. In conjunction with the Science-on-the-Move program, Judy hosted star parties in Elkton (Grades 7-12), Sioux Falls Christian (Grades 6-8), Great Plain Lutheran in Watertown (Grades 7-12), and Langford (Grades 7-9). | |||||
| During the 2004 South Dakota Science and Math Teachers Convention in Huron, Larry and Judy put on a workshop for teachers in how to build an inexpensive refracting telescope. (Larry's plans for the telescope are available under the K-12 Activities link.) | |||||
