M416 Trailer with Modifications

Here are pictures of a military “Jeep” trailer that I use with my ’55 M38A1.  The trailer is a 1967 M416 made by Stevens Manufacturing that I purchased from the United States General Services Administration (who sold it for the United States Forest Service).  I first restored it to stock condition and then made the following modifications:  installation of a tail gate, moved the data plate to the front of the trailer, full tail light lenses, installation of the rubber “bumpers” on that back of the trailer, and radial tires (these are the changes that I can remember at the moment).  The tail gate was custom fabricated and uses tail gate chains from a Dodge M715.

Front shot of the trailer showing the relocated data plate, lunette and all that stuff.

Here’s the tail gate showing how the tail gate chains fasten the gate in the up position.  It’s kind of hard to see, but a tab slips into the tail gate and the chain hooks into the tab, thus preventing the bed sides from spreading when the tail gate is up.

Same thing, different angle.

Here’s the tail gate in the down position showing how the chains work.  The chains slip into the tabs of the tail gate and nicely supports about 500 pounds with no deflection of the bed sides.  It took a few measurements to get the tail gate to properly line up flush (in the down position) with the floor of the trailer.

Same thing, different angle.
