Dr. Bruce Miller

Professor and Servant Extraordinaire

A long time professor, leader, servant, and friend of our department, Dr. Bruce Miller passed away last spring. He graduated from SDSU with a B.S. degree in 1947 (then it was SDSC). He began his teaching career here in 1958, and retired in 1988 marking 30 years of dedicated service. Upon retirement, he maintained his contact with our department by tutoring students in their physics classes. He helped our students in this way well into the fall semester of 2006, marking over 18 more years of service. His cheerful and caring attitude lifted the spirits of our department every time he was here. There was never any charge for the students, he only asked that they be prompt for the appointments. Many students give him sole credit for their surviving physics and going on to be successful in their academic careers. His passing marked an end to many years of service to us and to our students. It is only fitting and proper that something be done to memorialize his dedication and unselfish service.

A Bruce Miller memorial fund is in the process of being established through the SDSU foundation. It is hoped that sufficient funding can be received to establish a scholarship and/or some other type of permanent memorial to this wonderful man. His years of dedicated service to our students would seem to make a scholarship a fitting way to do this.

I will attempt to keep updates on the progress of the memorial fund available to interested persons on our departmental web page at www.engineering.sdstate.edu/~physics/physics.htm. One can go to this site directly, or through http://www3.sdstate.edu, the University's home page.
